The term brochure derives from the French "brocher," meaning to stitch [a book]. So, I guess it originally referred to printed and bound publications like magazines, catalogs, booklets, menus, annual reports, yearbooks and so on. Now days, the term brochure is also used to refer to leaflets and pamphlets, which can be single sheets that are folded or just trimmed to size.
